CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS AND THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE

We have no fewer than three of our Residents reaching their 100 years Anniversary this summer (indeed one will celebrate her 103 Birthday) and although we will be marking each special day with an individual party we thought it was an irresistible excuse to get out the Barbeque, pray to the heavens for some fine weather, and hold a splendid tribute to three exceptional people of a very grand age.

The Birthdays Barbeque will be held on Friday, July 6th from 11.30a.m. in the garden.

To add to the fun the theme will be an “American Ho-Down” and Big Chef (Chief !!) Noel will be sizzling away to produce cowboy food to delight us all accompanied by Country music and Buffalo cocktails.

A PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

“A cause for celebration”

Deaths from heart attacks have halved over the past decade. Last week’s cheerful headline put it all down to better medicine and less smoking. There is no doubt that, for the most part, we in the rich world are living longer and better. In August, a friend of mine will celebrate both the fifth anniversary of his retirement and his 100th Birthday. A bit slow on his feet, he lives alone, with a cleaner coming into his flat once a week and someone to drive him to the daily events that make up his very full social diary. Of course he’s one of the lucky ones, but his long lifespan is increasingly common. When George V first started to send a telegram to centenarians in 1917, he sent two a month. Ninety years later The Queen was sending two a day to people over 105.

All over Britain, newspaper reporters ask the same question of their local centenarian “what is the secret of so long a life?” The answers will be as contradictory as the health advice in the popular press. For every one who puts his longevity down to a lifetime of abstinence, there will another who will recommend good red wine, hard work, a happy marriage, religious belief, friends, family – the recipe is as elusive and contradictory as the characters who propound it.

Perhaps the most compelling anecdotal change in our lifetime is the population of our Retirement Homes. Forty years ago, they were largely filled by people in their seventies. Today, the nineties reign supreme. There is much comment on the difficulties all this presents for our society. The costs and the social impacts are significant. Yet, the upside is also well worth celebrating in a year that sees The Queen’s 86th Birthday and her Diamond Jubilee. All being well, it won’t be long before she’ll be sending her husband the equivalent of a telegram, and her capacity for work, her stamina and her acute mind set a right royal example.

THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATION

The day will be a celebration of this historic event as we theme our activities and menu around the unfolding pageant. With television coverage throughout the day, live programs, reflective documentaries and historical footage we expect many Residents to be fully engaged with the onscreen presentation but we also hope many of you will join us to share the happy day and join in with some organised fun and entertainment.

Easter at The Evergreens 2012

Always a time of happy anticipation, Easter this year falls at the beginning of April and with it a very real feeling that Spring has sprung and the warmer lighter days are already with us. Everywhere, plants are budding, grass is growing and the birds are flitting about searching for new materials to build their little homes and raise their chicks.

Here at The Evergreens we are especially pleased to feel the temperature rise as the lovely new patio area around the conservatory has been completed and there is the very real prospect of tea in the garden and perhaps even a suggestion of sun cream and parasols!

Now that the building part of the project (this phase at least) is complete we can turn our thoughts not only to landscaping and planting but also the creation of secluded areas  where bird tables and feeders can be located to encourage the many varieties of garden birds we have around . We will also be planting shrubs trees and flowers that attract and provide cover for not only the birds but butterflies and bees; indeed recognising and recording the creatures that inhabit the gardens of 2 Berkeley Road will be featuring as one of our popular activities and quizzes, and arts and crafts sessions will reflect how many of the residents have a love of our wildlife in its many guises. We hope a little later in the year to organise a trip to Avon Country Heath to see and learn more of the local species and habitat.

The Easter weekend will be celebrated in a traditional manner; Good Friday a day of quiet contemplation and reflection with symbolic Hot Cross Buns served at coffee-time , and Easter Sunday, joyous and triumphant with Easter-eggs galore, an Easter-egg hunt, and an Easter bonnet competition with prizes. Afternoon tea with Simnel cake will be served in the Conservatory and possibly on the patio!

To see our Easter menus please either click here or copies are displayed in the entrance hall.

As always visitors are very welcome to join us at any time, and may we wish you all the joys of Spring.

2012 Resident’s Survey Results

At The Evergreens, we take the standards of care we provide very seriously indeed and part of our ongoing improvement process is to get feedback from our residents and their families on what works and what we could do better. This year we asked for responses on a range of questions and we are happy to publish the results for you to see here. For those that did not remain anonymous, we have directly responded to matters which you considered were less that satisfactory and we have also formulated improvement plans based on the general survey results. The good news is that over 62% of the responses we had were ‘very satisfactory’ so we’re delighted that the effort our staff make has been recognised. So thank you to all of those who took part and all of our staff who carry on providing the top levels of care.

Please click on the image of the chart to view the results in more detail.

Spring Update

Guide Dog Sponsorship

We are all very excited to have the name of the Guide Dog Puppy that The Evergreens has decided to sponsor for the next two years. He is a gorgeous Labrador cross Golden Retriever called Skipper and he is just six weeks old. We shall be following his progress as he learns all the skills he will need to be someone’s eyes…..and their very best friend.

We shall be with Skipper on his journey with regular photographs and updates (pupdates!) and enjoy news of him as he grows and develops.

The Guide Dog service receives no government funding and so our contribution to the training of these dogs directly provides independence and freedom for blind and partially sighted people.

 Apprenticeships

At The Evergreens we have decided for the first time to employ a young person on a Government approved Apprentice scheme to give them the opportunity to train for an NVQ in Social Healthcare in a hands-on environment. With so many school-leavers finding it increasingly difficult to find work, especially if they have no work experience, we hope this scheme will benefit both of us and introduce into the Home an enthusiastic and motivated person ready to engage on all levels with the many challenges and rewards of Care work.

“Tea At the Ritz “ March 15th 3pm

We would like to welcome you to our take on afternoon tea as served in the grand salons and hotels since the middle of the nineteenth century and when The Duchess of Bedford complaining of “having a sinking feeling” during the late afternoon came up with the idea of a cuppa and light snack! It proved so popular that it was quickly taken up at Woburn Abbey where the Duchess’s friends were invited to join her for “tea and walking in the fields” and continued when they returned to London for the season. Before long all fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon.

In the best of that tradition we shall be serving a selection of freshly cut finger sandwiches, scones with preserves and clotted cream and a selection of delicious individual cakes, pastries and fancies, all to the accompaniment of music and songs with Darren Matthews.

The Dignity Code

This week, there have been a number of articles in the press relating to the elderly’s dignity in the care sector. The National Pensioners’ Convention has drawn up a ‘dignity code’ and they are petitioning the government to make it mandatory for all health care providors to sign up to. At The Evergreens, our resident’s dignity is always at the forefront of the care which we provide and we want to put our support behind the proposals. As a result, we are adopting the dignity code, as drawn up by the National Pensioner’s Convention and you can find a copy of if displayed in our Reception Area as well as a copy here on the web.

Burns’ Night!

There’s no better way of banishing January blues than with a Burns’ luncheon to celebrate the Ploughman-Poet or do justice to his Tonsil-Testing verse.

What better than a wee dram, Scottish smoked salmon and handmade haggis with all the trimmings?

You don’t need to be Scottish to get into the swing!

Leye’s Little Slip-Up!

Firstly I hope you have all had a very Happy Christmas and been able to enjoy some time off with family and friends and lots of festive cheer.

Unfortunately Frank and my plans have been rather scuppered by my managing to slip over on icy decking on December 18th, cracking my hip and fracturing my wrist in the process. I do feel very silly, and more than a little frustrated, and find myself hobbling about on a zimmer frame experiencing all too closely the problems so many of our Residents have! It’s probably just the lesson all Care Home owners should have! However I was very much looking forward to being at The Evergreens throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays and helping to ensure everyone had a very special time.

All the Staff have been wonderful stepping up, changing their own plans and filling in with all the extra tasks from hunting down the sherry and mince pies for Father Christmas, to making the tables look perfect for the festive meals. Marjorie, Noel, Cheryl and Corin have kept the seasonal food flowing and Debbie has somehow managed to keep the “big family” organised and content.

I thank you all very much and wish everyone the happiest of New Years, and good health in 2012. I’ll be back just as soon as I can.

Fantastic Christmas Trip!

Well weren’t we lucky! On Saturday 10th December, our intrepid residents donned their hats and scarves and ventured out into the fresh seaside air.

The minibuses picked us up mid-afternoon and whisked the explorers off to Poole Harbour. We were treated to some great hospitality from the Haven Hotel, having been met by a welcome party who proceeded to serve up silver trays with mulled wine and homemade sausage rolls. The view couldn’t have been better, with the orange sunset, ‘ploughed’ sky and the boats meandering past on the calm water.

Once darkness had fallen, we returned via the high streets of Bournemouth via Westbourne to see the Christmas lights and well earned sleep in the chair!

Take a look…
